Civil Society and NGOs: Are We Overlooking Solutions and Where Are the Best Partnerships?
Interactive Side Event

  • Language: Danish (no interpretation)
  • Location: Lille Sal

Many of Greenland’s future solutions rely on collaboration and partnerships, which may need to be sought in new places if the country is to achieve its development ambitions. This is especially true within the sustainability agenda, where the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework for working toward the remaining 16 goals.

This interactive side event takes an unconventional approach to explore how civil society and NGOs can collaborate with the business sector and political actors to pursue common goals and interests.

Uden finansiering, ingen udvikling. Hvad vil det sige at tiltrække investeringer?

Afvikles på engelsk – Tolkes til grønlandsk.
Placering: Hans Lynge salen

A sustainable society obviously needs a strong press!

Held in Danish – No interpretation.
Location: Hotel Hans Egede, room 57/58

The fourth estate is what the press is also called. But we live in a time where democracies are under pressure in many parts of the world. Social media provide opinions and input, but are not necessarily free from special interests or subject to an ethical or critical approach. What about the role of the press, and can we even say that the press and media have a role in society’s sustainability? This side event examines precisely this role and creates a constructive dialogue on how the role of the press looks in the past, present, and future, and how it can contribute to achieving some of the global goals and trends that are currently engaging large parts of society.

“Did you bring your husband?”

Held in Danish – No interpretation.
Location: Venskabssalen.
NOTE: Fully booked.

The question “Did you bring your husband?” may be appropriate if you are invited to a couples’ dinner and arrive alone, but what if you are a businesswoman at a meeting in your bank to secure credit for your start-up? Or at the lawyer’s office to sign a merger agreement for an exciting business deal you are entering? Here, the question is neither relevant nor appropriate in the same way, yet it is just one of many questions that female entrepreneurs and businesswomen have experienced. But why is that the case, and is there a connection between gender, entrepreneurship, career, and access to financing? Through a mix of facts, presentations, and dialogue, we will explore together with prominent businesspeople from home and abroad what it is – and can be – like to be a woman in entrepreneurship and business.

Side event moderated by: Director Jacob Nitter Sørensen, Air Greenland AS, and Chair of the Fonden for Entreprenørskab Kalaallit Nunaat, with participation by Director Christian Vintergaard, FFE-KN.

Panel participants: Britta Keldsen, Chair of the Greenlandic Gender Equality Council and businesswoman; Krissie Berthelsen, Co-owner and Director of Café Esmeralda and Pascucci; Louise Lynge Berthelsen, Director of Nuuk Couture; Frederikke Schmidt, Founder and Creative Director of Roccamore Shoes.

What can research and defense achieve together under the Defense Agreement?

Held in English – Interpreted into Greenlandic.
Location: Lille Sal

The Danish defense agreement, which entails investments of DKK 143 billion, attracts widespread interest. Not least because a portion of this amount is planned to be spent in Greenland. This creates opportunities for the Greenlandic business sector, but are there aspects that have not yet been highlighted? This side event raises the question of opportunities for research and defense. Are there overlaps, shared interests, and potential that can benefit Greenland? Can collaboration strengthen research, thereby benefiting not only the defense sector but also businesses and society at large?

Side event moderated by: Henrik Navntoft Sønderskov, Dansk Industri

Panel participants: Rasmus Leander Nielsen, Nasiffik – Center for Foreign & Security Policy; Mie S. Winding, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources; Aaja Chemnitz, Member of Parliament (IA)

Is politics only for politicians? Foreign policy is interested in you!

Held in Danish – Interpreted into Greenlandic.
Location: Hans Lynge Salen

“Nothing about us without us” has become a political guiding principle in recent years. But who exactly is “us” in this context? While politics is often seen as an arena solely for politicians and decision-makers, it is a crucial part of any society and affects everyone. The question of whether politics is only for politicians sparks discussion about citizens’ roles in political processes and the functioning of society. In this panel, the Greenland Foreign Policy Society will explore this question and examine how citizens can actively participate in the foreign policy agenda currently unfolding in the Arctic, influencing decision-makers and shaping the future they wish to see. Why is engagement in foreign policy important even for those who do not consider themselves politicians? And is foreign policy a process that affects us all?

Side event moderated by: Greenland Foreign Policy Society

Panel participants: Michael Binzer, Chairman of Polar Seafood; Carolyn Bennet, Canadian Ambassador; Jeppe Stransberg, Center for Arctic Security Studies, Danish Defence College

Inuit influence on Arctic marine governance.

Held in English – Not interpreted.
Location: Hotel Hans Egede (HHE), Room 10

Inuit participate in international forums such as the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement and the International Maritime Organization. In this side event, the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) brings the discussion on how influence over the regulation of Arctic waters can be strengthened, and how Greenland can expand its control over the surrounding seas. In the Arctic lifestyle, nature—and especially the surrounding ocean—plays a central role. As globalization increasingly shapes the political agenda, attention is also drawn to how borders and boundary definitions between Arctic regions affect the peoples who live in and rely on the region’s resources.

Side event moderated by: Sara Olsvig, International Chair, Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC)

Panel participants: Lisa Koperqualuk, Vice-President, ICC Canada; Vittus Qujaukitsoq, Director, KNAPK; Andreas Olsen, Trawler Manager, Royal Greenland; Perry Akavak, Project Coordinator, Baffin Fisheries; Kalistat Lund, Minister for Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy & Environment
